Lives and works in Cologne, Germany
Born in 1967 in Göttingen, Germany, Tobias Abel is best known for his monochrome paintings. The concept of these works is based on the play with monochrome color hues in combination with clear geometric constructions and focuses on a clear, precise, reduced way of substantial image structure. The works highlight the fundamental properties of color and shape. It is about structural relationships and the interaction with the space that surrounds the artworks.
When looking at the works of Tobias Abel, the minimalistic concentrations are noticeable in a few forms and colors. Rectangles, squares, ellipses, circles are his elemental vocabulary of forms, which corresponds to a reduced color palette that consists of white, gray and black. Abel also utilized colors that were derived from various metal types such as aluminum, copper, steel or gold.
